In 'Metaphors We Live By,' George Lakoff, a linguist, and Mark Johnson, a philosopher, suggest that the role of categorization in truth leads to hiding and accentuating certain traits of the objects being categorized. For example, consider the following sentences:
I am reading a science fiction novel.
I am reading a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
I am reading a novel about post-apocalyptic America.
All of these sentences, taken alone, mean very different things. However, all of the sentences above describe a single book: Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road.'
So don't be afraid to categorize your own work, or to discuss writing in terms of genre. Click on the appropriate forum for the genre you're interested in. Just continue to be aware of the hiding/accentuating nature of categorization in truth.
Scholarly discussion is always appreciated.
