A few days ago I downloaded Walden on my Kindle 2. I did this mostly because I thought it would be funny, not to mention ironic, and because I hadn't read much Henry David Thoreau. You can download Walden and Other Writings for a paltry $3.96. Using this book, I tried out the text-to-speech feature on the Kindle 2. I have to say, despite my misgivings, the voice worked pretty well. It gave me one error, which wasn't much of a problem, and it was a robot voice, straight out of Terminator, but, hey, still. The voice had proper inflection at most points. Personally, I found this shocking, because who ever heard of a robot with a feel for the emotional patterns of syntax in an essay-length book?

I'm not finished with the book yet, but, when I am, I'll post a full review online at Amazon.
